Statement from Institutional and Sustainable development Foundation on the world Environmental Day 2026.
05 June, 2026.
The institutional and sustainable development foundation joins the world and Nigeria in marking this year’s environmental day. We call on the government and people of Nigeria to focus on addressing some key areas that relates to the environment especially on the areas of methane emission management , the implementation of the countries NDC 3.O commitments , increased carbon sink and carbon credits, ensuring adaptation of a circular economy ,greening the economy and ensuring a sustainable economy. As we mark World Environment Day, Nigeria faces a critical opportunity to strengthen its environmental commitments amid growing climate challenges.
Methane emission
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas with over 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide in the short term, is a major concern in Nigeria, particularly from the oil and gas sector. Enforcing methane abatement measures is essential to curb emissions from gas flaring, leaks, and venting. Strong regulatory oversight, such as leak detection and repair programs, alongside incentives for capturing and utilizing wasted gas. This enforcement not only supports immediate emission reductions but also protects local communities from associated health and environmental hazards.
NDC 3.0 effective implementation
The effective implementation of NDC 3.0, Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement is important. This framework sets ambitious targets for emission reductions, renewable energy adoption, and climate resilience. However, success depends on strong governance, transparent monitoring, and adequate financing. By aligning methane abatement strategies with NDC 3.0 goals, Nigeria can demonstrate leadership in climate action while ensuring that its commitments translate into tangible results for communities most vulnerable to climate change impacts. It integrates just transition principles, renewable energy scaling. Effective implementation requires coordinated action across government levels, private sector investment, international support and civic society.
Promoting a Circular Economy in the country.
Promoting circularity in Nigeria’s economy is equally vital for sustainable development. On this World Environment Day, stakeholders must collaborate to build policies, infrastructure, and awareness that embed circular principles into daily economic activities. Nigeria must embrace circular economy principles to ensure sustainable growth. Circularity emphasizes reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling resources to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. For Nigeria, this means transforming industries like manufacturing, agriculture, and waste management into systems that prioritize resource efficiency. A circular economy not only reduces environmental degradation but also fosters innovation, creates green jobs, and strengthens economic resilience.
Remediation of polluted environment in the oil producing Niger Delta
Remediation of dilapidated Niger Delta environment as a result of oil spillage and pollution of the Niger Delta. The Nigeria government and the oil companies must ensure the clean up of polluted environment in the Niger Delta and decommissioned assets from divesting oil majors.
The implementation of Just Transition framework. Nigeria should ensure the adaptation and implementation of a wholistic and inclusive just transition framework that caters for the across the sectors oil and gas, Agriculture, power, industrial, circular, residential and other cross- cutting areas.
Greening the economy: Nigeria must ensure that to meet up to her environmental and climate commitment. It must be deliberate in ensuring the greening of the economy. This will ensure economic diversification, sustainability, creating of green jobs .
Other important commitment towards a sustainable environment include Tree planting, ensuring clean Air etc.
On this World Environment Day, the call is clear: The institutional and Sustainable development calls on Nigeria to enforce methane abatement, fully implement NDC 3.0, embed circularity into its economic model, Remediation of polluted environment in the oil producing Niger Delta, implementation of Just Transition framework, Greening the economy more sustainable future and ensuring a sustainable economy.
